GERTRUDE3 BLEULL was born on 16 May 1874 in Metamora, Woodford, Illinois.
She died on 07 Aug 1939 in Fairmont, Martin Co., Minnesota. She married
Joseph Krumholz, son of Jacob Theodor Krumholz and Agatha Kleinhanz, on 12
Jan 1892 in Fairbury, Livingston, Illinois, USA. He was born on 02 Jul 1866
in Moos, Baden, Germany. He died on 08 May 1938 in Fairmont, Martin Co.,
Minnesota (Calvary Cemetery).
Mama had a wood-burning stove for
cooking. We did not have running water. We would have to go out to the pump,
carry the water in a pail and set it by the sink. We had a dipper that we
drank from. If we had to have hot water we would fill the reservoir on the
stove with water and it would heat the water -- to a certain extent.
Sometimes we would put a kettle on the stove too.
In the winter, we
did our laundry in a room off the back of the dining room. In the summer, we
did it outside -- clear out in back. We had tubs that we would haul out. Two
tubs for rinsing the clothes, another tub to blue the white clothes and an
extra tub after that. Then we would wring them out and hang them up to dry.
It would take at least three days to get the laundry done. The first washing
machine we had wa a wringer machine operated by hand. In those days there
were no drip-dry fabrics so everything had to be ironed. We had a lot of
ironing to do and my older sisters had to do the ironing. We didn't have
electricity so we used a flatiron which was heated on the stove. When a
dress was washed, it was first rinsed and then starched. (Starch was used to
keep dirt from penetrating the fabric.) The starch made the dress very
stiff. After the starched dress was dry, we would dampen it with water and
roll it up tight. The next day we could iron it. Ironing was generally an
all-day job.
Anna had a job working for the Noltes. Josie stayed home
and did the sewing. Whenever a button came off a garment another was sewed
on immediately. Whenever an old garment was discarded, the buttons were cut
off and saved. When the men wore holes through their overall legs, we used a
worn-out pair as a patch. All the girls had a chance to learn to sew. But I
liked to crochet, Clara, Josie and Anna went to Katherine Kerns's Aunt Agnes
Krumholz's sewing school.
In the summer, the neighbors in the area
would get together and have barn dances. In fact, the neighbor across the
road had a fairly new barn and probably had dances every Saturday night.
They would have them up in the hayloft because the cows were below and the
floor was full of manure and in the summer there was no hay in the hayloft.
Someone would play the fiddle and we would dance and have a ball. Joe
Hoffman was a little older than me. He had a brother named Lawrence. They
would go to the barn dances and dance with us girls - Alice and me.
My mother (Gertrude Bleull Krumholz) was a very kind lady, very sociable.
She liked to knit and crochet. In the summertime she had us girls do the
housecleaning while she worked outside in her garden. She had a big garden
with flowers and vegetables.
We lived in a neighborhood where there
were a lot of Danes, Swedes and Norwegians. The people west of us were
German. Their name was Nolte. The people east of us were also German and
their name was Hoffman. The Noltes had a real nice home. They even had a
bathroom.
